Ibanez AS73

The Ibanez AS73 is one of the company's numerous low-cost guitars whose price belies the quality and value of the instrument. With a street price of only $399.99, this Chinese-made hollow-body guitar is well worth its low cost. Let's take a loot at the details of the Ibanez AS73.

Ibanez opted for maple for the top, back, and sides with a mahogany neck. This wood choice results in a crisp, clear tone overall. The fretboard is rosewood, bound, and has pearl dot inlays.

The pickups are dual humbucker, with an ACH1 in the neck and an ACH2 in the bridge. The double-cutaway design allows for easy access to the AS73's 22 large frets.

Three finishes are available - Ivory, Sunburst, and Transparent Cherry. We chose the Transparent Cherry and were very satisfied with our choice. We were also very pleased with the guitar's playability and breadth of sounds, especially given the price. The build quality is superior for a guitar in this price range.

Since it's a hollowbody, the acoustic sound is important, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a hollow-body guitar in this price range this good. Even if you triple the price, you'll have to search to find a solid competitor to the Ibanez AS73.

We tested the instrument with a variety of instruments playing several different styles, and from blues to jazz to rock, we liked what we heard. It responded well to a number of different amplifiers and unwanted feedback was never an issue.

We did have some very minor issues. The plastic nut is pretty cheap, and could stand to be replaced, but that's a relatively minor repair for a good repairman. While the finish wasn't 100% perfect, it was still excellent for a guitar at this price.

If you want a hollowbody guitar with some hip sounds and an attractive look but don't want to drop a lot of cash, you should seriously consider the Ibanez AS73. For less than $400 new, it's hard to beat.
